He may have lost the Oscar to Sean Penn, but Johnny Depp hasn’t lost his ability to captivate and charm an audience with his decidedly offbeat film choices, from his neurotic detective in “Sleepy Hollow” to the Keith-Richards-like Captain Jack Sparrow in last summer’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” This week’s “Secret Window” is a Stephen King adaptation served up by filmmaker David Koepp, who wrote the screenplay for “Spider-Man,” and it’s far more “Christine” than “Pet Sematary” thanks to the picky actor’s presence. MTV’s Ryan J. Downey caught up with Depp to talk about his impending reunion with the similarly eccentric Tim Burton, his new tattoo and what turns him off when someone hands him a screenplay. He watches hours of cartoons with his children, has taken up running and is working on his French to better communicate with his companion’s parents.

With his fine-boned good looks, longish dark hair and slightly boho demeanor, he could still pass for 25, but Johnny Depp is 40. And his days of drugs, drink and trashing hotel rooms are a thing of the past. [read more]

I love the idea of changing my look. I think one owes it to the audience, to go out there and give them something different each time, so as not to bore them to death. And I always felt that if you're not trying something different each time out of the gate, you're being safe, and you don't ever want to find that place of safety. I like that, each time, before I even go in front of the cameras, the studio's reaction will be fear. They have those hideous pangs of fear where they go, "He's fucking killing the movie." And I can't argue with them, because I might be. But I just know for the character that this is the right thing to do. And I've always enjoyed hiding behind these characters. It's a strange thing, you're more comfortable as a character than you are in life. You know what I mean? I could stand up in front of, it doesn't matter how many people, as a character. But if I had to do it as myself and give a speech, I would be liquid.
