Chocolate Factory on Top Spot
Warner Bros.’ Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp and Freddie Highmore, took over the North American box office with an estimated $55.4 million from 3,770 theaters. The opening marks the sixth best ever for the month of July and biggest for Depp. Depp’s last big family film, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, opened in first with $46.6 million in July, 2003 and ended up with $305.4 million. “Chocolate Factory” was based on the book by Roald Dahl, which was previously made into the 1971 Gene Wilder film, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Director Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, starring Johnny Depp and Freddie Highmore, opened to an impressive $20.8 million from 3,770 theaters on Friday. The adaptation of the Roald Dahl book was released by Warner Bros. Pictures.
