Prediction: ‘Sweeney Todd’ will win the Oscar

f you’ve checked out our first Buzzmeter, you’ll see that I buck the pundit tide and boldly predict that “Sweeney Todd” will win the Oscar for best picture.

No, I haven’t seen the film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim Broadway classic yet, but I have now heard from enough viewers to feel confident that I’m making a shrewd, if recklessly early call. They’re all deliriously passionate about it — in fact, they’re as mad for it as Sweeney is for his revenge-wreaking razor — and so far it’s the only film on the scene to inspire this kind of joy.

“Sweeney Todd” does that to people, even though they’re actually rooting for a deranged chap to slash men’s throats. It’s a proven recipe for Oscar victory, tattling on Hollywood’s sick dark side. Let’s recall that the last musical to win best picture — “Chicago” — also asked viewers to cheer on characters to get away with murder. (more…)

A plea for help

Okay, I would never normally post and ask for donations but this is an emergency. Mycah, fellow Famke-Janssen.org, Rose-McGowan.com and Glamour Reese Witherspoon webmistress, is in a horrible situation right now. Her house burned down earlier this week and she really needs our help. If you enjoy her work on her sites and can spare anything at all, please consider donating. She is okay but her family lost their home and all possessions and they have no place to stay. You can read about the incident here. If you can help at all, Mycah’s PayPal address is agnesfanb89@yahoo.com. I’m sure that any donations will be more than appreciated.

Candid Polaroid

In 2000, celebrity photographer Henny Garfunkel began taking Polaroids of her famous subjects at film festivals around the world. Since then, Garfunkel has collected signed snaps of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. The photographer’s work is currently on display at the Walter Reade Theater’s Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery as part of the New York Film Festival.

“I know Johnny because I shot the still photography on the John Waters movie Cry Baby in 1989,” says Garfunkel, who caught Depp in this slightly askew pose at the 2005 Toronto Film Festival. “He’s very fun and very spontaneous. He’s up for anything.”

‘Sweeney Todd’ Film is MPAA Rated-R

Garth Franklin of DarkHorizons.com reports the up-coming Tim Burton movie-musical adaptation of Sweeney Todd will receive an MPAA R-rating due to the amount of violence and gore in the film.

“Word was that Sweeney Todd, Tim Burton’s film version of the Stephen Sondheim musical about a barber who slashes throats and his cohort who bakes their remains into pies, had a lot of violence and gore. So, talk began that it was to be cut down to a PG-13 by executives hoping to cash in on Johnny Depp’s bankability with the teen crowd,” states the website, “The good news is the cuts aren’t being made, the MPAA has passed the film with an R-rating for ‘graphic bloody violence’ which sounds like Burton’s vision is remaining intact.”

While riskier parts of Burton’s film may remain intact, speculators say this may also make it more difficult for underage musical theatre- and Depp-fans alike to buy tickets.
