The Big Issue Ed #336
Actor Johnny Depp has pulled off a difficult double act: maintaining popularity and credibility. Rochelle Siemienowicz reflects on Depp’s eclectic career, while the man himself talks about his latest roles as bank-robber John Dillinger in Public Enemies and Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Hatter. Source

1. Public Enemies
Johnny Depp. Michael Mann. Christian Bale. The question is why you’re still here reading this instead of booking tickets for Public Enemies, the Mann film that casts Depp as legendary 1930s gangster John Dillinger and Bale as Melvin Purvis, the FBI agent assigned to track him down. We talked to the filmmakers (including Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard) to get the full story on the film’s history – which goes back to a script Mann wrote in the 1970s) and see what we can expect from this latest Mann opus. Also, Kim Newman lays out the 20 Greatest Gangster Movies You’ve Probably Never Seen.
Thanks to dcj_8417 for the scans
Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. If those two names alone don’t get you running to the theater, then consider the following: This biopic of bank robber John Dillinger (Depp) was directed by Heat’s Michael Mann and co-stars Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose). Missing it would be a crime.
Added scans of April 24 issue of EW in the gallery:

Rose and Jack have transformed the Hollywood star’s world
Johnny Depp has lived with long-term partner Vanessa Paradis in France for 8 years and the couple adore their two kids.
Fatherhood, says Johnny, has changed his life.
‘I wasn’t alive before,’ he admits. ‘I felt like I just wandered through 35 years in kind of a fog, then Vanessa, little Rose and Jack woke me up. Honestly, it was like being asleep for a long time and then waking up.’
The actor acknowledges Hollywood’s ‘insane’ and all ‘pretend’ so he enjoys the calmness of family life in Europe.
‘Being famous is kind of an occupational hazard,’ he says. ‘Once you reach a certain point, it takes a lot of money to buy a simple life. But I’ve had worse jobs. Anyone in this kind of privileged position has no right to cry about it.’
