Paul Bettany talks about Johnny

Now that “The Tourist” has an official release date, December 10, 2010, I thought it would be appropriate to introduce the real leading man of the film: Paul Bettany. Or have him introduce himself, rather.

When I caught up with the entirely too likable actor at San Diego Comic-Con to discuss “Priest,” Bettany deftly avoided revealing any actual details about his character in the film.

“I can’t tell you anything!” he said. Instead, he presented his co-stars as “unknowns,” (Johnny Depp plays an American tourist abroad who becomes involved with an Interpol agent, played by Angelina Jolie), and revealed who he fell in love with while making the film.

“‘The Tourist,’ with two unknown actors called Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie,” Bettany joked when asked to comment on the film. “[That] little indie movie… I think it was the first Paul Bettany movie they had ever been in and they were a little nervous.”

I sort of fell massively in love with Johnny Depp, who’s just one of the sweetest, funniest human beings you can possibly imagine,” he added. “It’s so nice when you meet one of those people who make that much f–king cash, that you kind of go, ‘I’m really glad it happened to you.’ It’s awesome.

Sooo… not much actual news from Bettany other than he has a crush – which makes me think he plays the villain. Still, it’s good to know!

The Tourist scheduled for a December 10 release
Filed Under: The Tourist

Rumored to hit in December earlier this year, it looks like Sony/Columbia have indeed slotted Florian Henckel Von Donnersmarck’s “The Tourist” for a December 10 bow.

A romantic spy drama based on the 2005 French film “Anthony Zimmer,” this U.S. version (directed by Von Donnersmarck (a German and the same man behind “The Lives Of Others”) follows a bumbling American tourist (Depp) as he finds himself romantically involved with an international spy (Jolie) in what sounds very much in the vein of a Hitchcockian tale, but likely isn’t the case (it’s a fun little story, but isn’t all that meaty). Some sites will tell you that this means “The Tourist” is chasing an Oscar bid, but clearly they haven’t read the script. While not bad by any means, certainly enjoyable, and the version that will hit the screen is probably less fluffy than the version we read, Sony’s move is probably more akin to Warner Bros. placing “Sherlock Holmes” in December last year. The holiday season has become the new tentpole month and “The Tourist” should be engaging, but escapist entertainment that does well at the box-office, but is unlikely to pull in any Academy statuettes. Timothy Dalton, Steven Berkoff, Paul Bettany and Rufus Sewell co-star in the pic which shot in Venice earlier this year.

Depp, Burton Team for ‘Dark Shadows’

Tim Burton and actor Johnny Depp will team for a feature film version of the classic 1960s soap opera “Dark Shadows.”

The film will shoot in the fall, with Depp set to play the vampire Barnabas Collins, according to producer Graham King.

“We’re actually going to shoot that film next September/October with Tim Burton and Johnny,” King confirmed in an interview Friday in Los Angeles.

To guarantee a fall release, King is already prepping production with screenwriters.

“We’ve been working on the script a lot, even though he’s working on ‘Alice,’” King said. “We’ve been given a script. John August wrote the first screenplay. We’re making some changes, but the film’s going to be in production …”

From 1966 to 1971, “Dark Shadows” was a daytime gothic soap opera on ABC, featuring Jonathan Frid as Collins. NBC attempted a prime-time series reboot in 1991 that stared Ben Cross.

Johnny Depp: from Jack Sparrow to Pancho Villa
Filed Under: Movies

Captain Jack Sparrow isn’t the only daring adventurer in Johnny Depp’s repertoire, as the actor plans on bringing his own unique spin to the historical Mexican revolutionary hero Pancho Villa.

According to Variety, Depp will star as Villa in an upcoming biopic titled “Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman with Six Fingers,” which is easily one of the longest, most terrific titles I’ve heard for a prominent film in the past couple of years.

Depp will share the screen with Salma Hayek, who is in “advanced talks” to star in “Pancho Villa,” most likely as the titular woman with six fingers. Does that mean she only has six fingers total, or six fingers on one hand ala “The Princess Bride”? All six fingers are crossed for the latter.

The film comes courtesy of Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica and screenwriter Gordan Mihic, based on the novel “The Friends of Pancho Villa” written by James Carlos Blake. Blake’s book focuses on Villa as not only an excellent and accomplished soldier, but also as a big fan of “dancing, partying and making love.”

If you’re wondering about how “The Friends of Pancho Villa” might affect Depp’s upcoming work on the next “Pirates of the Caribbean” film, don’t worry too much. According to Variety, the film isn’t expected to begin production until 2011 due to Depp’s prior commitments.

POTC4 subtitle
Filed Under: Pirates of the Caribbean 4

Disney enthusiasts who made it to the studio’s big D23 Expo yesterday were treated to surprise appearances by a batch of big name stars. Depp was, of course, there to help kick up the buzz on the fourth film of the Pirates of the Caribbean blockbuster franchise. Hitting theaters next summer, the title for the fourth film was officially revealed to be…are you ready?…Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Rob Marshall of Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha fame will be taking over at the helm of On Stranger Tides after Gore Verbinski, the director of the first three Pirates movies, opted out to work on other projects.

The movie also stars Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, Jude Law , Christopher Plummer, Tom Waits, Lily Cole, Andrew Garfield and Verne Troyer.
