Johnny Depp is to produce and star in the film adaptation of Hunter S Thompson’s autobiographical novel ‘The Rum Diary’. Thompson wrote the book – which is loosely based on his time in the 1950s working as a journalist in Puerto Rico – in 1959 but it was not published until 1998.

Oscar-winning producer Graham King’s GK Films has acquired the rights to the book, which King will produce with Depp for Warner Independent Pictures.

Depp will also star as Paul Kemp, a journalist writing for a rundown newspaper in San Juan alongside a motley self-destructive crew. Bruce Robinson (‘Withnail & I’) is writing the adapted screenplay and will direct. [source]

I have to be truthful I have never heard of this movie until this website. So thank you. If I met Johnny Depp and I had the chance to tell him anything I would let him know that he is my role model. He is a special person and he doesn’t need to hear this from me because he is already doing this. But to always be himself. I believe that is why every one loves him as a person. I wish in all my biggest wishes that I could meet him. I would be the happiest person on earth if I could meet the most extrodanary JOHNNY DEPP!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the idea of changing my look. I think one owes it to the audience, to go out there and give them something different each time, so as not to bore them to death. And I always felt that if you're not trying something different each time out of the gate, you're being safe, and you don't ever want to find that place of safety. I like that, each time, before I even go in front of the cameras, the studio's reaction will be fear. They have those hideous pangs of fear where they go, "He's fucking killing the movie." And I can't argue with them, because I might be. But I just know for the character that this is the right thing to do. And I've always enjoyed hiding behind these characters. It's a strange thing, you're more comfortable as a character than you are in life. You know what I mean? I could stand up in front of, it doesn't matter how many people, as a character. But if I had to do it as myself and give a speech, I would be liquid.
