Johnny Depp is Courted for Addict

The BBC reports that Johnny Depp is being courted to star in a film about a drug addict who turns his life around after living on the streets of Wrexham. “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and King Kong star Andy Serkis will direct the movie.

Shooting of Addict, based on the best-selling biography of writer Stephen Smith, is to start this summer.

Mr Smith said he was in talks and hoped to sign up “Pirates of the Caribbean” star Depp “within three weeks”.

The 61-year-old writer said the film will be all about his life as a young man addicted to amphetamines who drifted into crime and ended up living on the streets of Wrexham for a few months.

According to IMDb.com, Johnny Depp is set to reprise his acclaimed role as journalist Hunter S. Thompson in the sequel to his first 1998 hit Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
The follow-up, entitled The Rum Diary, is based on Thompson’s very first novel, which journals his career and personal escapades in the 1950s Puerto Rico.

Depp will be executive producing the feature.

Thompson shot himself to death at his secure compound in Woody Creek, Colorado, on February 20.

Arsi has sent me this link which has an early review of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. WARNING: Might contain spoilers (I’m not reading myself, I like staying spoiler free!)

Some people have e-mailed me about comments not appearing. I was getting bombarded with over 200 spam messages, a day, and I had to install a very high spam protection control, but, it’s not perfect and it will block actual comments sometimes. I’ve modified it a bit, and hopefully it won’t delete any more comments.

Bill Nighy on Pirates
Filed Under: General and Pirates of the Caribbean 2

Empire Online caught up with British actor Bill Nighy, who stars as planet builder Slartibartfast in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and asked about his upcoming slate.

Nighy said that his character Davy Jones will very much be the villain of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and possibly Pirates of the Caribbean 3.

“I am a very, very, very, very bad man and I am there to make people suffer in all new ways, in ways that you won’t have seen before,” he smiled. While staying mum on how that will be done, he did reveal that “I have a boat and I have a crew, and they are really evil buggers.”

He added that his character will have quite a bit of help from the effects wizards at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). “I’m so computer generated that you might have trouble spotting me. You’ll know it’s me, but you might have to check the credits afterwards,” he laughed.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (July 15)

•What’s popping? Director Tim Burton and Johnny Depp join forces for the fourth time with this trippy take on author Roald Dahl’s deliciously subversive fable, which also inspired the 1971 Gen-X fave Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

As before, good-natured Charlie Bucket (12-year-old Freddie Highmore, who reunites with his Finding Neverland co-star Depp) and his Grandpa Joe (David Kelly of Waking Ned Devine) win a chance to tour Wonka’s wondrous candy factory.

They are joined by four gluttonous children who suffer sticky comeuppances, thanks to the wily Mr. Wonka. Willy’s dad, Wilbur (Christopher Lee) — a new character — shows up in flashbacks.

•A few more kernels. The pop-art trailer suggests a psychedelic sugar rush is in store. But those salivating to hear The Candy Man, forget about it. “The only music is when the Oompa Loompas (the factory’s tiny handymen) sing chants after each child encounters problems,” says producer Richard Zanuck. As for the 1971 version, he says, “this not a remake. This is Tim’s version of Dahl’s book.”

Burton is doing his best to bring Dahl’s semi-sweet fantasy to high-caloric life, building a candy land on 17 soundstages at London’s Pinewood Studio. Besides a chocolate river with an 80-foot waterfall, “there’s a nut room with 200 squirrels at work,” Zanuck says. Yes, actual rodents. “From birth, we sent them to training school for six months.”

As for Depp’s interpretation of the mysterious Wonka as a Carnaby Street mod hatter with a propensity for saying, “Let’s boogie,” Zanuck notes, “All I can say is that it lives up to his sense of the bizarre.”

•Bonus treat. In the first movie, the Oompa Loompas were played by dwarfs. Now they are all played by the same 42-inch-tall actor, Dee Roy, who is shrunk via camera tricks to a mere 30 inches.

•Yum factor. Johnny Depp and chocolate outdoes peanut butter and chocolate any day.

Also, I havent been replaying to my e-mails, so, please don’t e-mail me again ok? I’ve been busy and I’m trying to post news as they happen. And also, please, DON’T apply for affiliation, I’m not accepting at the moment and I will not reply to any request.

Pirates Sequels to Feature Cannibals
Filed Under: Pirates of the Caribbean 2

The BBC reports that the “Pirates of the Caribbean” sequels plan to portray Dominica’s Carib Indians as cannibals. Shooting on the films is expected to take place this April in the area, with hundreds of Dominicans applying to be extras in the movie.

Carib Chief Charles Williams said talks with Disney’s producers revealed there was “a strong element of cannibalism in the script which cannot be removed”.

The Caribs have long denied their ancestors practiced cannibalism. “Our ancestors stood up against early European conquerors and because they stood up…we were labelled savages and cannibals up to today,” said Williams.

About 3,000 Caribs live on the island of Dominica.
