EW.com – Johnny Depp says his 8-year-old daughter is now healthy and well following her hospitalization earlier this year.
“Now every single millisecond is a mini-celebration,” the 44-year-old actor tells Entertainment Weekly in its Nov. 9 issue. “Every time we get to breathe in and exhale is a huge victory. She pulled through beautifully, perfectly, with no lasting anything.”
Lily-Rose, the daughter of Depp and French singer Vanessa Paradis, was admitted to a British hospital to receive treatment for an undisclosed ailment about three weeks after Depp started work on “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” Tim Burton’s adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical about a murderous barber.
“To say it was the darkest moment, that’s nothing,” Depp tells the magazine. “It doesn’t come close to describing it. Words are so small. But knowing that those people, Tim and the crew, shut down and stood by and waited … I didn’t know if I was coming back. I remember talking with Tim, saying, `Maybe you need to recast.’”
“Once we were given the all-clear, I had to dive back into the work,” he says. “I had to get back in there for Tim.”
“Sweeney Todd” is set for limited release in the U.S. next month.
Depp and Paradis also have a 5-year-old son, Jack.
f you’ve checked out our first Buzzmeter, you’ll see that I buck the pundit tide and boldly predict that “Sweeney Todd” will win the Oscar for best picture.
No, I haven’t seen the film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim Broadway classic yet, but I have now heard from enough viewers to feel confident that I’m making a shrewd, if recklessly early call. They’re all deliriously passionate about it — in fact, they’re as mad for it as Sweeney is for his revenge-wreaking razor — and so far it’s the only film on the scene to inspire this kind of joy.
“Sweeney Todd” does that to people, even though they’re actually rooting for a deranged chap to slash men’s throats. It’s a proven recipe for Oscar victory, tattling on Hollywood’s sick dark side. Let’s recall that the last musical to win best picture — “Chicago” — also asked viewers to cheer on characters to get away with murder. Read more… »
Okay, I would never normally post and ask for donations but this is an emergency. Mycah, fellow Famke-Janssen.org, Rose-McGowan.com and Glamour Reese Witherspoon webmistress, is in a horrible situation right now. Her house burned down earlier this week and she really needs our help. If you enjoy her work on her sites and can spare anything at all, please consider donating. She is okay but her family lost their home and all possessions and they have no place to stay. You can read about the incident here. If you can help at all, Mycah’s PayPal address is agnesfanb89@yahoo.com. I’m sure that any donations will be more than appreciated.
In 2000, celebrity photographer Henny Garfunkel began taking Polaroids of her famous subjects at film festivals around the world. Since then, Garfunkel has collected signed snaps of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. The photographer’s work is currently on display at the Walter Reade Theater’s Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery as part of the New York Film Festival.
“I know Johnny because I shot the still photography on the John Waters movie Cry Baby in 1989,” says Garfunkel, who caught Depp in this slightly askew pose at the 2005 Toronto Film Festival. “He’s very fun and very spontaneous. He’s up for anything.”
The Film Society of Lincoln Center will show clips from the upcoming film version of Sweeney Todd as part of An Evening with Tim Burton, to be held at 8pm on Wednesday, November 14 at the Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center.
This special event will include a conversation with the director and a screening of clips from his various films. Sweeney Todd, which Burton has adapted from the Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical, will open officially on December 21 with a cast led by Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Alan Rickman.

It’s hard to put your finger on why he’s so extraordinary but technically he’s astonishing. He’s absolutely brilliant with the kind of technique you’d only get if you’d spent ten years at RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts) and it’s all self taught. You don’t want to work with anybody else once you’ve worked with somebody as good as that. For me it was like working with the Python team again – he’s that fast and funny and inventive. — Terry Gillian
