Paramount Home Entertainment has alerted retailers to expect Sweeney Todd to be released April 1 on HD DVD, day-and-date with the standard DVD version. And no, the release date is not an April Fool’s joke.

Sweeney Todd, directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, is based on the Tony Award-winning musical. Depp received an Oscar nomination for best actor for his role in the film. The film also stars Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jamie Campbell Bower, Laura Michelle Kelly, Jayne Wisener, Ed Sanders, and Timothy Spall.

Paramount has yet to issue an official announcement so we won’t have any specific disc information until they do. Also, as with any early retailer dates, the release date could change at any time.

Sweeney Todd on HD DVD will carry an SRP of $39.99. Check back regularly for high resolution cover art, disc specs, special features, and pre-order information.

Seriously I hope that this is not some internet joke because if it is, it is very very cruel…However, if this does turn out to be a definite thing, I don’t even own an HD tv but I may buy one just so I can watch this movie! I don’t normally do musicals, but this one is just awesome! Okay so I’ll probably skip past all the Joanna scenes and maybe spend a little bit too much time watching Sweeney slash throats, but that’s the beauty of owning the film. I especially would love to be able to re-watch Sweeney toss Ms. Lovett in the oven just one more time. I laugh everytime…okay was I suppose to? No? Oh well, it’s still funny

You gotta admit though, seeing it on standard version just doesn’t do the film justice! Gotta see it on HD! It’s just better

In any case, April promises to be a nice self-gift month for me. Sure it’ll be my sister’s birthday and I’ll get her something, but I’ll be the one with the big grin because I’m buying the first copy sold of Sweeney Todd. It’ll help soothe the disappointment of my Xmas gift from my brother. Can you believe it? I asked for all 3 POTC movies for Xmas (I ruined Curse of the Black Pearl) and I thought I made myself clear about the movies needing to be originals. I pop in At World’s End and it turns out to be bootleg. I was soooooo angry with him! This is off subject, but…well I like Johnny and I don’t wanna cheat him out of anything, so I don’t watch that one at all. The other 2 are fine though. He actually bought those. By the way…Is it true that the POTC movies money was used to fund terrorism? I read that somewhere on the net. I don’t think it is, but…well, you never know anymore what happens once the movie is released.

I love the idea of changing my look. I think one owes it to the audience, to go out there and give them something different each time, so as not to bore them to death. And I always felt that if you're not trying something different each time out of the gate, you're being safe, and you don't ever want to find that place of safety. I like that, each time, before I even go in front of the cameras, the studio's reaction will be fear. They have those hideous pangs of fear where they go, "He's fucking killing the movie." And I can't argue with them, because I might be. But I just know for the character that this is the right thing to do. And I've always enjoyed hiding behind these characters. It's a strange thing, you're more comfortable as a character than you are in life. You know what I mean? I could stand up in front of, it doesn't matter how many people, as a character. But if I had to do it as myself and give a speech, I would be liquid.
